Answers to your Questions

I want you to feel safe and sure about everything to do with your placenta and postpartum journey. Read some frequently asked questions about my business and my services. If you still haven’t found the answer you are looking for, feel free to get in touch with me.

Why would I want to encapsulate my placenta?

Some of the most often-reported benefits to placenta consumption are:

  • Increase in energy

  • Reduced risk of postpartum mood disorders

  • Decreased risk of anemia

  • Improvement in overall mood

  • Decreased postpartum bleeding

  • Breast milk regulation

These are the most common benefits we hear most often from our clients.  These same benefits have been confirmed in animal studies.

What is the Encapsulation Process?

  1. First, we thoroughly rinse the placenta and then remove the amniotic sac and the umbilical cord.

  2. After the placenta is cleaned, we slice it into thin strips and put it into a single purpose dehydrator for 12-18hrs.

  3. Once dried we put the placenta into a grinder and process it until it is a fine powder.

  4. Next we fill the capsules with the aid of a capsule filling contraption called a “cap-m-quik.”

  5. We typically get 125-200 pills per placenta.

How long will it take to get my capsules?

Ideally, the placenta is encapsulated within 48 hours after the birth. For SF Birth Center clients the capsules will be ready for pick up, or will be brought to your home visit within four days of your baby’s birth.

What are reasons you can't encapsulate a placenta?

It is important to note that there may be circumstances under which your placenta cannot be used. Significant abnormalities of the placenta may necessitate your doctor or midwife sending your placenta to Pathology for further examination.

Other conditions, such as signs of infection in the birthing person during labor, may mean that consuming your placenta will not be beneficial to you. If in doubt, I will consult with you before proceeding.

Please let me know if you have any health conditions or medications which may affect the health of your placenta or the health and safety of anyone who may come in contact with your placenta.

What if I am GBS positive?

Concerned about GBS in the newborn and placenta encapsulation? This large research study found that babies whose parents encapsulated their placentas were no more likely to have GBS disease than parents who did not encapsulate.
